Abstract:

Background: Since 2011,World Health Organizition( WHO) through OPEC Fund For International Development( OFID) support has extended its regular technical support to Nepal’s National Blood Program, particularly on quality assured screening of all donated blood, development of different guidelines, protocols, hands on skills based trainings to Blood Transfusion Services( BTS) staff on Quality assured(Transfusion Transmitted Infection( TTI) screening and waste management. In order to understand the progress made by the National Blood Transfusion Services in last 4 years (receiving OFID/WHO support and as planned in the 5 years national BTS Strategic Plan 2008-2013), it was important to carry out assessment of the Blood Transfusion Service Centres( BTSCs) and health care facilities providing transfusion services. This information would help to identify gaps related to implementation of the recommended strategies on blood safety, along with the impact of the OFID support in BTS in Nepal.

Objective: a) To assess the impact of the OFID support in BTS operation in Nepal, which is one of the requirements of OFID for continuation of its support in future; b) to assess the progress till date and to identify the gaps on five year strategic plan (2009-2013) mainly on organizational, managerial and technical aspects of the currently operating BTSCs in Nepal.
